Like many of my patients I was not introduced to the Chiropractic profession until later in my life. I was brought up on the medical model for many years. I developed allergic asthma when I was very young. It was triggered by the changing of the seasons in the Northeast. Like most asthma sufferers I was introduced to traditional medical approaches such as the Albuterol inhalers and nebulizer treatments. My worst memories as a child were going to my primary care physician for an asthma attack. The pressure in my chest and the wheezing would get so severe that the MD said the best thing to do was to give me a shot of adrenalin to open up my airways. Knowing now what adrenalin does in the body I understand why I felt so awful after every shot. My breathing would improve but as a result my heart rate would increase so much that my chest would literally pound to the point of sever discomfort. I remember my mom sitting on the bed with me with cold compresses trying to get me to calm down. It was the worst feeling I could possibly imagine.
As I grew the asthma also grew worse. I advanced from nebulizer treatment and albuterol inhalers to steroid inhalers and hospital treatments. I could not participate in sports for prolonged periods and had to carry an inhaler with me at all times. This continue into my college years. My sophomore year in college I was sitting in class and I had been turning and grabbing my neck when my friend Sarah, who was sitting next to me, said that was not good for my neck. She told me that she had been suffering from neck and back pain and was seeing this wonderful doctor who had gotten rid of her aches. She invited me to go with her to an appointment that afternoon and I agreed. When we got there I was surprised to see that it was a chiropractor. I had no idea what a chiropractor did. His name was Dr. Page and he was absolutely the most caring person I had ever met. At the time he was in his late twenties and had a small office with one front desk girl. He invited me to watch Sarah’s adjustment and explained to me what he was doing. When he finished he invited me to come in for a consultation. He took xrays and pointed out to me my postural abnormalities. I started a course of treatment with him much like my patients do now and I learned how to reduce my aches and pains as well as how to care for my back and help correct my posture. I finished college, with the intent of pursuing a career in medicine, while seeing Dr. Page monthly.
I received a call from my mother one day and she asked me about my asthma. In our discussion I realized that I had not had as asthma attack in over a year. I could not explain it and immediately I called Dr. Page and asked him about it. He explained to me how the nervous system worked and how there were nerves in the neck and upper back that controlled the lungs. He explained to me how subluxations caused pressure on these nerves and could interfere with normal function of the lungs. He expressed to me that never once was he treating my asthma and that he was only correcting the subluxations or misalignments and as a result pressure on the nervous system was removed and the lungs were able to function at a 100% allowing the asthma to resolve on its own. I was AMAZED. My whole view of medicine had changed. Dr. Page gave me an application for a Chiropractic College, I filled it out, was accepted and the rest is history. To this day I have not had one single asthma attack since the first day I got adjusted and when I feel even the slightest bit of discomfort or tightness in my chest I get checked for a misalignment.
Since my graduation from chiropractic college I have been fortunate enough to associate with Dr. Jeffrey Shebovsky in South Orlando. In this time he has shared his knowledge and talent to provide quality and effective treatment to his patients for over 11 years with me. During this period I have been able to affect the lives of hundreds of patients including children with asthma as Dr. Page did for me. I am extremely happy and proud to be able to expand the scope of this knowledge to encompass the East Orlando area with the opening of East Orange Wellness and Injury Center in Andover Lakes.
I am proud to say that everyday that passes, I am happier and happier that I am a Chiropractor. I thank Sarah for introducing me to Dr. Page and especially Dr. Page for taking the time to care and for helping me get into the best profession in the entire world. I look forward to meeting you and your family and together we can increase your quality of life.
